35th Annual Conference/Convention

You are invited to join us as we celebrate the 35th Annual state Conference of the American Council of the Blind of Texas! The conference is being held at the Hobby Marriott Hotel located at 9100 Gulf Freeway Houston, Texas.

The room rate is $79.00 per night plus tax ($92.43) for up to four people. The hotel offers free wireless internet in guest rooms and meeting spaces. Hotel reservations can be made by calling 713-943-7979. To ensure that you receive the special room rates mention that you are registering for the American Council of the Blind of Texas Conference. Check in time is 3:00 p.m. and check out time Sunday is 1:00 p.m. All reservations must be made by May 17th to receive the special rate.

The hotel provides complimentary shuttle service to and from Hobby Airport. Limited service is available within a 3 mile radius depending on availability.

If you are eligible for Paratransit services in your area, you are eligible to ride METROLift. Tickets for METROLift can be purchased for $9.75 for a sheet of ten tickets. A ticket is required for each trip. (Information on eligibility for METROLift is enclosed.)

The pre-conference board meeting will be held on Thursday afternoon from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. Registration will be open on Thursday afternoon from 3:00-7:00 PM.

The conference is packed with informative and educational activities. These include workshops, seminars, special interest affiliate meetings, (Library Users of America-Texas, Braille Revival League-Texas, Guide Dog Users-Texas, and Computer Users) representatives from agencies and organizations of and for the blind, exhibitors showing the latest in technology and products and much more. The exhibit hall will be open from 9:00 A.M. until 5:00 P.M. on both Friday and Saturday. This is an opportunity for hands-on examination and testing of equipment and technology designed to improve the quality of life and create more independence for people who are blind or visually impaired.

A highlight of the weekend will be our Friday evening Showcase of Talent. members from around the state will entertain attendees with their songs, hula hoops, poems and musical instruments!

Saturday will be filled with affiliate workshops, luncheon, opening session, sessions on self defense, ballroom dancing, computers and technology, how to access your government, a Presidential Reception honoring our ACBT First Timers and the Candidates Forum. Saturday evening will feature our banquet with a keynote speaker and a special tribute for our 35th anniversary.

Saturday evening will climax with our bi-annual auction. This is an opportunity to take home some great items and help raise some funds for ACBT at the same time. So, crack open those piggy banks and come prepared for some competitive bidding and lots of fun with some lively auctioneers!

Sunday morning begins with the Awards Breakfast and continues with our ACBT business meeting, a DARS, update from Barbara Madrigal and elections.
